Australian company Ansell is engaged in aggressive union busting in Sri Lanka. They have sacked around 300 workers fighting to have their union recognised in one of Sri Lanka's so called Free Trade Zones.
Ansell's anti-union activities have been in place since 1994 when they refused to recognise the Free Trade Zone General Services Employees Union. In October 2013, 800 workers striked in protest of terrible work conditions and the sacking of 11 union representatives, including the union president.
Ansell then suspended approximately 800 striking workers. The majority of these workers had families to provide for. International workers rights groups IndustriAll and LabourStart were ignored by Ansell.
Current management of Ansell clearly does not regard worker's basic rights as a priority.
Australian unions, in solidarity with the FTZGSEU, will be informing Ansell shareholders about the awful treatment of Sri Lankan staff.
Demand that Ansell reinstate the sacked workers and recognise its workers' right to organise. You can access the Facebook event here.
